A-STEP Sleep Technologist

80 hr A-STEP Introductory Course, Feb 1st, 2021(Admission closed)

This 80 hour course is designed for individuals without experience who wish to enter the field of sleep technology. It is also appropriate for the new sleep technologist or allied healthcare professional, who seeks an introduction to or review of sleep medicine and polysomnography. The A-STEP curriculum has been developed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a comprehensive introduction to sleep technology for the novice technologist. After successful completion of the course, students will be required to perform duties specified in in the job description for a Polysomnographic Trainee. 

A valid high school diploma or GED is required for enrollment into the A-STEP program. Students must submit a copy of the diploma or GED to the National School of Sleep Medicine before attending the course.

National School of Sleep Medicine has developed an A-STEP program ideally suited to the needs of the adult learner.  


During the 8 week  (80 hours) online and live program in Columbus (February 1st, 2021 and April 2021), course work focuses on didactic presentations mixed with the practical component of preparing patients for sleep studies, acquiring data, as well as staging and scoring. Faculty for the course include: registered polysomnographic technologists, respiratory therapists, and board certified sleep specialists.

Completion of an A-STEP training course at National School of Sleep Medicine is not a guarantee of employment in a sleep laboratory. Job placement is not available through the school, although we do advise students during the course on how to obtain their first job in sleep.

Students interested in enrolling in sleep technology courses should check with their respective state medical boards to determine licensing requirements in polysomnography, if applicable.

* The $3,100 tuition fee for the program includes the cost for the first attempt of the A-STEP examination administration fees up to 30 days after completion of the live program.*

Please note: Financial aid is not available for the A-STEP course.
